Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a colorless liquid inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax during dental treatment. The gas produces a slight tingling sensation and a feeling of euphoria, allowing you to feel relaxed about your procedure. At Carlston Dental Group, our dentist will control the nitrous oxide you receive to ensure your safety during treatment. You may also be given oxygen to breathe and nitrous oxide throughout the procedure. Once treatment is complete, the nitrous is turned off, and oxygen is administered for about five minutes to help flush any remaining gas from your body. You may feel light-headed or dizzy when you leave the office; however, this should subside within a few minutes. You shouldn’t drive a vehicle for at least six hours after receiving this sedation.
Compared to other forms of sedation, nitrous oxide provides numerous benefits. First, it’s typically requested by patients who experience mild to moderate anxiety when faced with an upcoming procedure or checkup. Second, patients can drive themselves home after the process is complete—a benefit that every patient is bound to appreciate! Finally, nitrous oxide has few side effects and is entirely safe for children and adults. Children often request this treatment because it allows them to remain calm and comfortable throughout their appointment. In some cases, it can help to eliminate any negative memories they might have of past dental procedures. If you or your child are nervous about visiting the dentist, ask your dentist if they offer this service—it might be just what you need to feel comfortable in the dental chair!
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a colorless and odorless gas administered through a small mask worn over the nose during the procedure. It is one of the safest sedation techniques in dentistry. Laughing gas is non-addictive and will not cause patients to feel tired or disoriented for hours after the procedure. Laughing gas wears off fairly quickly, so the patient can drive home after their process. Patients may have mild amnesia from the sedative as well.
A nitrous oxide is an excellent option for patients who suffer from anxiety surrounding dental treatment because it can provide a mild level of sedation without the side effects of other sedation methods. The sedative wears off quickly after the procedure, so the patient will not feel any lasting effects from their treatment.
