Dental implants are titanium posts that act as tooth root substitutes. At Carlston Dental Group, they are surgically placed into your jawbone, where they integrate through osseointegration. Osseointegration allows the implant to replace your tooth’s root system with a titanium post supporting a crown, bridge, or denture.
At your appointments, we will plan for your surgery. We will review your medical history and determine your right implant size. If you smoke cigarettes or have certain medical conditions, you may need to delay treatment until after you have quit smoking or had surgery to treat the disease. During surgery, you will have a local anesthetic to minimize any pain and discomfort during placement. Once your anesthesia takes effect, we will make a small incision in your gums and place the implant in your jawbone. Depending on your needs, we may place just the top portion of the implant during your procedure. Your gums will heal around that portion and attach to the bone below it. After four to six months, we will reopen the area to expose the top of the implant and place an abutment. The abutment connects the crown, bridge, or denture to the implant.
The implant is a small titanium post surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone by one of our doctors. After the implant is placed, our doctor will attach an abutment to the implant during a minor procedure in our office. A temporary crown can be placed on the dental implant while your gums heal, and your permanent crown is created in our lab. Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be attached to the abutment. The crown is custom-made to fit your smile perfectly!
Dental implants are an increasingly popular tooth replacement method. This is due to several factors, the most important being that they do not slip or slide in your mouth. Other benefits include improved aesthetics due to the natural appearance of implants and easier oral hygiene because the teeth do not have to be removed for cleaning and maintenance.
Placing dental implants requires multiple visits to our dentist’s office. The first is the consultation visit, where our surgeon will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for this procedure and which type of implant would be best for you. Once the type of implant is selected, we can proceed with the surgical visit, where we will insert the implant into your bone. It would help if you waited a while to allow your bone to heal around your new dental implant. After healing, we place a crown over the abutment so that your artificial tooth looks like it’s one of your natural teeth.
If you are missing individual teeth, we can use implants to replace them with natural-looking crowns permanently. Contact Carlston Dental Group at 2472 Overland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90064 or call (310) 838-0844 for more information.
